“No one ever took God for his friend that was not amply rewarded; for mental prayer is, in my opinion, nothing else but being on terms of friendship with God, frequently conversing alone with Him, who, we know, loves us.” St Teresa of Avila

The aim of the Group is for its members to grow in prayer following the teachings of St Teresa of Avila. The meetings in the current programme, which will run from October 2021 to May 2022, will follow this journey of prayer as described in St Teresa’s Way of Perfection with reference to the example of other Carmelite saints.

The Group is organised by the London Secular Carmelites under the direction of Fr Matt Blake OCD. Monthly meetings have a distinguished Carmelite speaker, followed by a time of quiet prayer and small group discussion and sharing about the talk and our experience of prayer. Membership of the Group is open to all and is free.

The talks for the 2021/22 programme are being recorded in advance and therefore members can choose to attend the monthly meetings at five different locations or times. Sessions at the Carmelite Priory Kensington will take place on two different days:

  1. on a Thursday evening, from 6.30pm to 8.15 pm. First meeting 7th October
  2. on a Saturday morning from 10.00am to 11.15am. First meeting 9th October.

(There will also be sessions, starting in October, at St Monica’s Church, Palmer’s Green N13 4DJ; Holy Innocents’ Church, Orpington and the Carmelite Priory, Gerrards Gross. For details of these contact Mark Courtney as below.)

The recorded talks will be made available to members at the beginning of the month via a private YouTube channel. Everyone attending the Saturday morning session will be assumed to have watched it at home in advance of the meeting which will start with a brief racapitulation and ‘Question and Answer’ session on the talk, following which there will be a short period of silent prayer and small group discussion. At the longer Thursday evening session at Kensington, the recorded talk will be shown on a big screen followed by silent prayer and discussion.

Those interested in joining the 2021-22 session should register in advance, by 4 October, with Mark Courtney as below. It will still be possible to attend at the first Thursday evening session on 7 October and register then: but it will not be possible to attend the Saturday morning session without advance registration.
